1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-4, Zelinka 2-A, W-13820. Rarity-3. No P, Older Head. AU-55 (PCGS). 108.2 grains. This is the second of three Nelson-4 Voce Populi halfpennies included in our (Stack's) Ford V sale of October 2004, in which it was cataloged as: Choice About Uncirculated...Normal sized flan. Very attractive dark olive green and brown in color. Obverse and reverse surfaces just microgranular and certainly not disturbingly so. Broad strike with a full border of denticles on the obverse and all reverse letters and date numerals fully on the flan. Sharp centers as expected from such a strong strike. There are faint traces of original min lustre [sic] visible in places in the fields. A couple of minor reverse rim tics and a bump are noted. A tad sharper than Norweb:3408. Some of these Z.2-A's were struck from a misaligned obverse that slammed into the planchet with such force that metal was forced up and around the die (the Norweb coin is another example). Others were not (the preceding and the next lot are others). Why is a mystery. The primary Ford Nelson-4 most recently appeared in our November 2023 sale of the Sydney F. Martin Collection, and in recent years we have also handled other Mint State examples from these dies. The Ford-Emerald Coast specimen offered here would be difficult to improve upon at the Choice AU level, and it is a strong representative of the distinct Older Head variety. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part V, October 2004, lot 6. PCGS# 262. NGC ID: 2AUC. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
