1723 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny. Martin 4.57-Fa.4, W-13470. Rarity-3. MS-64 RB (PCGS). 112.0 grains. One of the varieties of the issue with a period before the word HIBERNIA in the reverse legend. In the late state of Martin Reverse Fa.4, as seen here, there is a prominent peripheral break at or above the letters BERN in the same word. This is a magnificent specimen, perfectly centered within sharp borders. Some softness of strike through the centers, but not uncommonly so for the type. Beautiful surfaces retain approximately two-thirds of the original mint red color on the obverse, only slightly less so on the reverse, with a nice intermingling of light olive-brown patina. Scattered carbon flecks include two more sizeable spots on the obverse above the upper ribbon end and below the tip of King George's nose, these being the only singularly mentionable blemishes. Hard and frosty with superior quality and outstanding eye appeal in a Wood's Hibernia halfpenny irrespective of date or variety. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of Selections from the Richard Picker Collection of Colonial & Early American Coins, October 1984, lot 71. PCGS# 181. NGC ID: 2ATD.
