1723 Wood's Hibernia Farthing. Martin 3.3-Bc.3, W-12500. Rarity-5. Silver. Specimen-45 (PCGS). 72.5 grains. Lightly worn surfaces are attractively toned in blue-gray, mauve and antique gold, both sides with plenty of bold to sharp strike detail retained. Plenty of nice gloss, as well, and free of troublesome marks. While this Martin number appears relatively frequently in silver, nearly every silver specimen shows significant wear. The highest graded of six pieces we've offered since 2016 is the PCGS AU-58+ in our November 2023 offering of the Sydney F. Martin Collection; the others, including this one, range in grade from EF-40 to AU-58. Puzzlingly, the silver varieties of Wood's Hibernia farthing that tend to come in nice grade seem to always come in nice grade. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, May 1996, lot 33; Heritage's Long Beach Signature Sale of September 2016, lot 3392. PCGS# 179. NGC ID: F7HP.
