1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny. Martin 2.1-B.1, W-1218. Rarity-4. D:G:REX

1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny. Martin 2.1-B.1, W-1218. Rarity-4. D:G:REX / ROSA AMERI. UTILE DULCI. MS-63 (PCGS). A sharp and lustrous specimen with deep olive-brown surfaces that are harder than typically encountered; this variety is often quite granular in appearance. All of the design elements are present and accounted for, including the king's hair and the reverse rosette. A faint carbon spot in the field below King George's chin is noted, but it is more than offset by blooms of original faded brassy-gold color in the left field on that side, also in a few isolated areas on the reverse. PCGS has graded three example of this distinct Rosa Americana halfpenny die marriage at this grade level and one finer, although their current online Population Report says 2/0. We have offered all three MS-63s: this one, previously from our August 2011 Chicago ANA Auction, where it realized $6,612.50; the Craige specimen, lot 8 from our March 2013 sale, realized $4,406.25; and the E Pluribus Unum Collection coin that brought $4,320 in our November 2020 Auction, lot 4046. Based on the prices realized, this is the nicest of the three. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our Chicago ANA Auction of August 2011, lot 6020, where it realized $6,612.50. PCGS Population: 2; 0 finer. PCGS# 101. NGC ID: 2ASH. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
