All auctions / Coins & Banknotes / 111 Ancient Roman / Byzantine Lead Seals, Tesserae and Tokens, Cruciform

Mediterranean, Roman and Byzantine world. A dense assembly of 111 cast and struck discs, mostly lead with tin and copper content, their soft grey surfaces carrying frontal busts, cruciform monograms, lattice and pellet patterns, crosses, and blocks of lettering. Several are pierced or tabbed, and a number preserve the squat, double-faced profile of sealings squeezed around a cord. Lead pieces of this kind circulated across the Roman and later Byzantine Mediterranean as tokens, tesserae, weights, and official or commercial bullae rather than as currency, redeemed for grain, bath entry, or games, or affixed to documents and bales as a guarantee of authority.
