The Star 258 by Andy Warhol as Part of a Larger Body of Work
The Star 258 is part of Andy Warhol’s 1981 Myths series, which depicts star Greta Garbo as Mata Hari. The image is based on a photograph of the actress in her role as the Dutch spy who was executed for her supposed involvement with the German army during the first World War. Andy Warhol, Myths, The Star 258 is a part of 10 screenprints in the Myths series that exemplify Warhol’s unerring sense for the powerful motifs of his time. Most of the images in Warhol’s Myths series are taken from 1950s television or old Hollywood films. They portray the universal view of America’s once captivating and commanding past. Other pieces included in the series are characters loved by children such as Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doody, and Santa Claus, as well as fictional figures like Dracula, The Wicked Witch of the West, and Uncle Sam. As this British weekly reprinted Marvel books over several issues, when they split up a story, they needed an all new splash page. This splash was created for a reprint of Pages 11-19 of the story from #115. Michael Golden turned in a bang-up job rendering the Vision, Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, Thor, Swordsman, Mantis, and Captain America! As with all such Marvel UK intro pages, the credits shown refer to the remainder of the story rather than to the splash page itself. A gorgeous page crafted in landscape format in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 15" x 10". The page was landscape format because this title reprinted the US stories two pages side-by-side on a single page, making a horizontal format book. All text on this page is stat paste-up, some coming loose. The toned page bears a secret as well.... a inked image on the reverse with a joke referencing Frank Robbins. Signed by Michael Golden in the side margin, the page is in Very Good condition.HID07601242017Read more

Rare 1961 Fleer Pirate Bold Wax Box with 24 Unopened Packs.
As children, right along with playing astronaut landing on Mars or being the sheriff in some lawless town in the wild west was life aboard a wooden ship with vast sails as a lawless, carefree pirate on the high seas hunting for gold and treasure! Sadly, as we mature we realize this life was hardly the colorful, romanticized version but what amazing characters this world gave us. They had such cool names like, Rufus Trench, Henry Morgan, Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, Anne Bonney and Rock Braziliano. The 1961 Fleer "Pirates Bold" set of 60 cards were both fun and educational. The fronts featured portraits and an "action scene" while the backs offered biographical information and some historical fact. Offered is a complete wax box of twenty-four 5-cent unopened packs! While individual cards are obtainable. . We have found reference to only one past auction of a complete box and that was 16 years ago. The top panel shows some buckling and a partial separation at the delicate perforations but is otherwise close to mint condition. Packs quality is exceptional. HID07601242017Read more
