John William Polidori THE VAMPYRE 1819 Antique British...

Title: The Vampyre; a Tale. Author: John William Polidori - John William Polidori was an English writer and physician. He is known for his associations with the Romantic movement and credited by some as the creator of the vampire genre of fantasy fiction. His most successful work was the 1819 short story, "The Vampyre," the first published modern vampire story. Although originally and erroneously accredited to Lord Byron, both Byron and Polidori affirmed that the story is Polidori's. (Courtesy of Wikipedia) Publisher: Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones City: London Year: 1819 Printing Information: Other - see description Binding Style: Hardcover Pagination: xvi / 84 pages Width: 6.25" Height: 9.75" Book Details: "The Vampyre" is a short work of prose fiction written in 1819 by John William Polidori. The work is often viewed as the progenitor of the romantic vampire genre of fantasy fiction. The work is described by Christopher Frayling as "the first story successfully to fuse the disparate elements of vampirism into a coherent literary genre. The story has its genesis in the summer of 1816, the Year Without a Summer, when Europe and parts of North America underwent a severe climate abnormality. Lord Byron and his young physician John Polidori were staying at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva and were visited by Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley and Claire Clairmont. Kept indoors by the "incessant rain" of that "wet, ungenial summer", over three days in June the five turned to telling fantastical tales, and then writing their own. Fueled by ghost stories such as the Fantasmagoriana, William Beckford's Vathek and quantities of laudanum, Mary Shelley, in collaboration with Percy Bysshe Shelley, produced what would become "Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus." Polidori was inspired by a fragmentary story of Byron's, "Fragment of a Novel" (1816), also known as "A Fragment" and "The Burial: A Fragment", and in "two or three idle mornings" produced "The Vampyre".[Courtesy Wikipedia] Condition / Notes: This is a scarce early issue of this work, most likely the first edition's third issue, based on the presence of the misspelled "lmost" on line 24 of page 36 and the re-setting of the prefatory "Extract of a Letter from Geneva" to 23 lines. This antique volume has been rebound in black pebbled leather with stamped gilt lettering/ruling to the spine and covers as well as five raised bands on the spine. The exterior is in excellent condition. A tipped-in leaflet on a blank preliminary reads "This book is bound by R. R. Donnelley & Sons Co., Chicago, with acid-free leather specially manufactured according to the recommendation of the Society of Arts Committee on Bookbinding." Polidori's name is hand-written underneath the title on the title page. The pages show mild age toning and light foxing, mostly in the margins. The volume is housed in a cloth-covered slipcase with a reflective pattern.. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. For lots which are not books, the stated shipping cost in this listing will apply only to addresses within the continental 48 states.
