About the item

Eugene Deveria was a French history painter and pupil of Girodet. Born is Paris he worked mostly in France, but he travelled to Scotland in the late 1840's where this picture was commissioned. Laurence Davidson was the youngest son of the Edinburgh solicitor Harry Davidson. He became writer to the Signet in 1825 and joined his father and brother James in partnership before they merged with Thomas Syme and became known as Davidsons and Syme. The company finally merged with Dundas and Wilson in 1972.\nSigned and dated centre right: Eug Deveria / Edinb 1850

The catalogue illustration is representative and the painting appears to be in very good condition, with no extant damages or loss of paint. The canvas has been lined but the surface of the paint is in excellent condition and is not abraded at all. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a small number of very minor retouchings in the background, which have been well applied and are not visible to the naked eye.
