About the item

[NEW HAMPSHIRE]\nActs & Laws of His Majesties Province of New Hampshire in New-England. With Sundry Acts of Parliament. By order of the Governor, Council and Assembly, Pass's October 16th. 1759. Portsmouth: Daniel Fowle, 1761. American binding of blind-tooled panelled calf, later paper label and modern clamshell case. 11 3/8 x 6 1/2 inches (29 x 17 cm); [2-title], [xii-table], 240 pp., collating pi1 A-C^(2) chi^(2) ^(2)C^(2) D-U^(2) W^(2) X-2U^(2) 2W^(2) 2X-3N^(2); [4-title and blank], 24 pp. of Temporary Acts. Binding rubbed but sound, probably lacking free endpapers, Bar Association stamp and date at the head of the title, occasional toning but generally a clean copy.\nA pair of rare early New Hampshire legal imprints by Daniel Fowle, New Hampshire's first printer, who arrived from Boston in 1756 (he had been jailed for three days in 1754 for a pamphlet attacking the Excise Act, an experience that clearly rankled considerably, and led to the publication of two pamphlets decrying the lack of justice in that town). The first work is Evans 8943, the second Evans 8945. The typography of these two works is most attractive, with much creative use made of ornament. ESTC lists 24 pp. for the Temporary Acts (as here), but makes mention of the possible existence of a 28-page version.
