Photographies Tessa Angus. This hotel hall derives from a memory of Italy. It's an attempt to recollect the space, with its silence, its light, the setting sun casting shadows of the banister rail on the pink marble floor, that abandoned sense of the "annual closure", right down to the dust sent up by some building work. Invent nothing, just attest to the place, make it reappear, the armchair on which lies a newspaper from last season, from that time when footsteps, women's voices, children's laughter, when music resounded down these endless corridors, to make all that exist again, forever. (Personal note, May 4, 2003 - published in Charles Matton, Enclosures, page 180)
