The first items were auctioned off this week in their Masterworks auction, which included 43 lots from the Mellon estate.

The lots included two important paintings by Mark Rothko which sold for $39,925,000 and $ 36,565,000. The lots also included works by René Magritte, Édouard Manet and Georgia O'Keeffe.

100% of the lots sold at the auction, also known as a white glove sale, which is a rare feat. If this auction is any indication of how the next Mellon estate auctions will go, Sotheby's can expect November to end on a very lucrative note.

The next auction, Jewels & Objects of Vertu, is set for November 20 followed by Interiors on November 21 – 23.
