Rare hand-hammered sterling silver presentation compote Hans Christensen, Copenhagen and New York, circa 1970s Rare hand-hammered sterling silver presentation compote Hans Christensen, Copenhagen and New York, circa 1970s

A personal favorite, the maker, Hans Christensen (1924-1983), shaped the craft of silversmithing in America, as he was one of the most accomplished and inventive designers of the second half of the 20th century. This is evident through the tooled tree bark textured base on the compote, which has been applied with depictions of craftsmen at work. The team at Freeman's, have found that no other example of this design has appeared at auction. The compote is also engraved as a presentation piece for the “Charlotte Fredericks Mowris Professorship in Contemporary Crafts,” making it particularly rare as Christensen was the only endowed chair  of this Professorship.
