The painting is said to have been painted in 1606 and that it was lost a few years later when Caravaggio fell ill while travelling back to Rome. He had the painting in his possession at the time, and when he passed away from the illness the painting was lost.

The current owners contacted Gregori and asked her to decipher a hand-written note on the back of the painting. From this note Gregori learned that it was commissioned by one of Caravaggio's most important patrons, and together with her own expert analysis of the painting she determined that this was the original. The current owners have declined to sell the piece, but it may be displayed for the public in another manner.
