Owens' works has influences rooted in a variety of art movements and techniques whilst also making reference to great artists including Joan Miro and Henri Rousseau. She is part of the L.A. Women Artists group which includes Frances Stark and Sharon Lockhart and was the youngest artist to ever have a retrospective at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

In a statement, De Niro commented: "Laura Owens's gallery of work is one that truly captures everything we are looking for when awarding the Robert De Niro Sr. Prize."

"In recognition of my father's legacy, we want this award to celebrate and honor Laura Owens, an American painter who is creating her own legacy through her incredible artwork."

Owens' latest works are on view as part of the MoMA's ''Forever Now'' exhibition.
