Paul Gauguin is one the most renowned names within modern art. The artist was originally French but spent time in Tahiti painting primitive Polynesian scenes, often depicting women and landscapes. The piece When Will You Marry is one of his most famous paintings and portrays two Tahitian girls dressed in bright colors.

The previous record holder for most expensive painting was Paul Cézanne. His painting The Card Players sold for $259M in 2011 to the Qatari royal family.
