A Berks County (Pa.) painted pine dower chest, made circa 1775, sold for $280,600 at an Americana & International Auction held April 28th by Pook & Pook, Inc., in Downingtown, Pa. Also, a colorful Charles Hofmann landscape painting realized $43,920; an oil on canvas foxhunt scene by American artist Charles Morris Young knocked down for $29,280; a magnificent Arms of Pennsylvania platter hammered for $34,160; and a Johann Adam Eyer fraktur changed hands for $9,150. Original artwork by legendary comic artist Frank Frazetta, titled Death Dealer 6 (1990), first published as the cover for Verotik’s 1996 Death Dealer #2 comic book, sold for $1.79 million at a World Record Comic Book & Art Auction held May 10-12 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Tex. Also, a copy of Action Comics #1 (DC, 1938), the first appearance of Superman, graded CGC VG 4.0, brought $573,600; and a copy of Batman #1 (DC, 1940), CGC NM+ 9.6, made $215,100. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

An untitled painting by Keith Haring from 1983 sold for $1.335 million at a sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art held May 16th by Phillips in New York. Also, John Chamberlain’s Chamooda (1975) realized $795,000; George Condo’s Marc Jacobs (2007) went for $591,000; Jaume Plensa’s Kneeled Shadow (2008) brought $591,000 (a new world auction record for the artist); Max Ernst’s Clouds, Sun and Sea (1952) made $579,000; and a 2015 Yayoi Kusama work hit $555,000. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

An 1892-S Morgan silver dollar, graded MS65 PCGS, sold for $193,875 at Regency Auction 6 held May 16-17 by Legend Rare Coin Auctions (based in Lincroft, N.J.) at Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans, La. Also, an 1891-O Morgan dollar, graded MS65 PCGS, commanded $58,750; an 1889-O Morgan dollar, graded MS66+ PCGS, fetched $43,475; an 1889-CC Morgan dollar, graded MS63 PCGS, went for $42,300; and a 1927-D silver dollar, MS66 PCGS, brought $41,125. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

Also, a California landscape with poppies oil on canvas by Granville Redmond (Calif., 1871-1935) rose to $156,000; and a large oil on canvas painting by Frederick J. Mulhaupt (N.Y., 1871-1938), titled Morning, Gloucester Harbor, made $90,000. Prices include the buyer’s premium.
