Alongside the Shelby Cobra, a Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-Type became the most expensive British automobile to ever be sold at auction, as the model reached a staggering $21.78 million at RM Sotheby's on August 19, 2016. The car was once part of the Ecurie Ecosse race team.

The Shelby Cobra came from the private collection of Carroll Shelby and was consigned by the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust. It smashed the American record of $11 million which was paid for a a 1968 Ford GT40 at the very same sale back in August 2012.
