The sale features a collection of nearly 200 framed photographs that span the career of American photographer Wingate Paine (1915-1987). Contemporary and commanding similar prices as Richard Avedon he is celebrated for his advertising photographs, such as the Wolkswagon Beetle ad and sultry but revolutionary images of women from the 1960's. He is also, together with his wife Natalie Paine who was the director of a New York modelling agency, the creator of Mirror of Venus, a publication and collection of photographs that became iconic for the Sexual Revolution, as Paine himself puts it a "confirmation of my feelings toward beauty and beautiful women."



Contemplation of the Divine at Sotheby's London open until July 16.

Contemplation of the Divine is Sotheby's first selling exhibition of Old Master Paintings and Sculptures at their New Bond Street location. The show comprises some twenty paintings, predominantly Spanish, Italian and early Netherlandish, ranging in period from the early Renaissance to the late Baroque, together with seven Spanish sculptures from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Most of the pieces, featuring powerful and harrowing imagery, are of museum quality. Prices are upon request and visits upon appointment.
