An untitled oil on canvas painting from 1982 by Jean-Michel Basquiat (Am., 1960-1988) sold for $110.5 million at a Contemporary Art Auction held May 18th by Sotheby’s in New York City. It was a record for any American artist at auction and a record for a work of art created post-1980. Also, Roy Lichtenstein’s larger-than-life Nude Sunbathing realized $24 million; Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild brought $15.425 million; and Robert Rauschenberg’s Rigger made $12.275 million. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

An untitled portrait painting of New York musician Arthur Morgan Lindsay (Arto), done in 1982 by Jean-Michel Basquiat (Am., 1960-1988) sold for $497,250 at an auction held May 20-21 by Clars Auction Gallery in Oakland, Calif. Also, an oil on canvas by Blanche Hoschede Monet (Fr., 1865-1947) went for $97,000; an untitled oil on canvas by Sohrab Sepehri (Iranian, 1928-1980) fetched $94,500; and a painting by Ivan Shishkin (Russ., 1832-1898), titled Wooded Clearing, hit $84,700. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

A sculpture by Yves Klein, titled Venus Blue, sold for $137,500 at Fine Art Auctions held May 6th by Rago Arts & Auction Center in Lambertville, N.J. Also, Fernando Botero’s Femme au Serpent knocked down for $125,000; Karel Appel’s Quatre Tete hit $112,500; Serge Poliakoff’s untitled painting changed hands for $81,250; Gravitation by Edouardo Chillida rose to $75,000; Olivier Debre’s Nature Morte finished at $50,000; and an untitled portrait by Fernand Toussaint made $35,000. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

A 1793 U.S. 1-cent wreath coin with lettered edge, graded PCGS MS64, sold for $293,750 at a Regency Auction held May 18th by Legend Rare Coins, based in Lincroft, N.J. Also, an 1879-S ‘Super Fly’ toned U.S. Morgan dollar, PCGS MS67+, brought $27,025; an 1886 ‘Outrageous’ U.S. Morgan dollar, MCGS MS67, climbed to $21,738; a 1951 U.S. proof Franklin half-dollar fetched $13,512; and a 1908 $10 ‘Motto. Matte’ issue, PCGS PR67, went for a record $146,875. Prices include a 17.5 percent buyer’s premium.

A Winchester 1873 3rd model rifle in rare, seemingly unfired condition, sold for $8,125 at Firearms and Native American Auctions held May 20th and 22nd, respectively, by Pook & Pook, Inc., in Downingtown, Pa. Also, two Zuni inlaid bolo ties fetched $1,437; an Eduardo Garcia fancy silver-inlaid blue steel bit and spurs set realized $1,025; a collection of early 20th century Apache beaded leather items brought $2,182; and a Baretta 687 EELL Diamond Pigeon shotgun hit $5,612. Prices include the buyer’s premium.
