In 2008, the record was set at $76 800 but Sotheby's The Library of an English Bibliophile, Part IV sale last night trumped the previous record for Tolkien's novel.

The copy was a gift for Tolkein's student, Miss Katherine "Kitty" Kilbride, as inscribed in a note in Elvish in the cover of the book.
