However, the real buzz of the night was around Willem de Kooning's Untitled XXVIII, 1977, which sold $11.4 million against a $10-15 million preseale estimate. Excitement was at an all time high in the sale room as this was the piece as it was the first time it had ever been brought to auction.

The Modern and Impressionist sales which will continue in New York this week at Phillips, Christie's and Sotheby's are expected to raise a total of $1.4 billion.
