A bronze depiction of a cowboy on horseback by the California sculptor Betty Saletta sold for $5,000 at an auction held Jan. 20-21 by Holabird Western Americana Collections, LLC in Reno, Nev. Also, a War Eagle 25-cent true “one-armed bandit” slot machine from the 1930s fetched $2,875; a mint condition A.B. Stewart & Co. (Virginia City, Nev.) drug store bottle from 1877 realized $2,250; and a scrimshaw cup fashioned from a carved horn around 1802 gaveled for $1,312. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

An 1875 Wells Fargo reward poster for “Alkali Jim” sold for $10,200 at an auction held January 25th by PBA Galleries in San Francisco, Calif. Also, a copper-engraved chart of the Straits of Singapore from 1711 realized $6,600; a collection of about 92 glass lantern slides and other related photographs, postcards and a diary changed hands for $6,600; and a manuscript edition of The Writings of John Muir, edited by William Frederic Bade, with numerous plates, made $5,100. A pair of Louis XV inlaid petite commodes sold for $36,000 at an auction held Jan. 26-27 by Brunk Auctions in Asheville, N.C. Also, six first-edition volumes of John James Audubon’s Birds of America hammered for $31,200; a Japonesque painting from 1888 titled Child of Wealth brought $31,200; a Maud Gatewood painting titled Harrowed Field Sunset breezed to $19,200; and a gorgeous Pennsylvania Chippendale mahogany spice cabinet went to a determined bidder for $18,000. A Tiffany Studios candlestick from Cleveland’s Rowfront Club sold for $20,400 at a Winter Auction held January 26th by Cowan’s Auctions in Cleveland, Oh. Also, one lot of 21 diminutive white jade cat carvings also brought $20,400; a bronze sculpture by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (Am., 1880-1980), titled Extase (1920), made $14,760; a late 19th/early 20th century mechanical bank by J. & E. Stevens hit $2,520; and a 1905 Steiff center seam cinnamon teddy bear fetched $2,829. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

A Sculpture Front cabinet from American Modern furniture maker and New Hope native Paul Evans rose to $137,500 at Design Auctions held Jan. 19-21 by Rago Arts & Auction Center in Lambertville, N.J. Also, a French Art Deco Lalique Palestre vase brought $40,625; a squeeze-bag decorated vase by Frederick H. Rhead for Arequipa garnered $93,750; an enameled copper dragonfly tray by Tiffany Studios hit $37,500; and a sculpture by Albert Paley titled Harlequin made $68,750. Prices include the buyer’s premium.
