Bacri Frères Antiquaires - Collection Jacques Bacri - March 30, 2017

The Bacri brothers were well-known art dealers during the mid-20th century who were connoisseur of the 18th century. Their exceptional collection, which is at Sotheby's this month, combines their passion and the expertise.

The drawings and paintings up for sale on March 31 dominate the collection and are testament to the Bacri Frères' excellence in art collecting.

"My father Jacques liked to discover, was passionate about research and left on each object passed in his hands a valuable documentation (...) The Epoch High was his passion,'' explained his daughter Clotilde Bacri Herbo.

The most anticipated work from the Bacri collection is a portrait of Anne de Pisseleu, Duchess of Etampes (1508-1580) which painted around 1545 by Corneille de La Haye and entitled Corneille de Lyon.

Seduced by her beauty and intelligence, the Duchess was Francis I favourite - this is the first time a mistress had such a political influence over a king. A first version of this painting with a bluish background and a somewhat different pictorial treatment is in the at the Metropolitan Museum of New York's collection.

A double part of a triptych by the mysterious master Johannes is also one of the rare lots in the Bacri Collection.

Originally belonging to a corpus of five paintings preserved between Flanders and Spain, only these two parts representing the saints John the Baptist and Agnes and a Baptism of Christ were still in private hands.

In terms of the drawing section, this landscape by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, created around 1760 is a typical gallant scene, this ink-washed drawing represenings a couple entwined on a background of nature.

Jacques Bacri was also a great specialist in medieval tapestries, this piece depicts a battle scene in which knights clash with a multitude of infantrymen.

Important sculptures and reliefs from the artists period of the Upper Epoch are also going under the hammer.

Evidence of the eclecticism of Bacri's taste, the collection also includes a torso of an Esculape marble of the 2nd century AD. J.C., which is estimated to sell between $54 000 and 86 000 by the experts at Sotheby's.

Collection of Sir Erik Le Caruyer of Beauvais - March 31, 2017

On March 31, Sotheby's the collection of Erik Le Caruyer de Beauvais, an antique dealer and self-taught collector, will come to auction. Furniture, sculptures and objets d'art from Europe and Asia make up this 148 lot sale.

Via the gallery that he had opened at boulevard de Courcelles in Paris, Mr. Le Caruyer de Beauvais shared his passion with many international collectors. Although his knowledge of Art History is vast, he developed a particular appetite for the French decorative arts from the 17th to the 19th century as well as works from Asia.

One of the important lots coming to auction at Sotheby's is from the collection of Mayer Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905), it is a pair of porphyry and gilded bronze medieval tables dating back to 1820- 1830.

A Guanyin statue of gilded bronze from the Ming Dynasty (16th-17th century) is a symbol of Le Caruyer de Beauvais' great taste for Asian art - as it is a true treasure of Buddhist art.

A magnificent church interior scene by Antwerp painter Bartholomeus van Bassen is another example of Erik Le Caruyer de Beauvais' keen eye for collecting exquisite pieces.
