The painting is from the collection of Samuel Courtauld, founder of the Courtauld Gallery and Institute of Art, who acquired the painting in 1936. Until now it has remained in a private collection.

Cézanne created the work between 1883 to 1885 during one of his last trips to the Provence fishing port L'Estaque.

Vue sur L'Estaque et Le Château d'If is estimated at circa $12.5- 18.8 million (£8 million-£12 million).
