Masquerade by Konstantin Somov is a fantastic example of commedia dell'arte, a form of theatre which began in Italy in the 16th century and is characterised by actors who wear masks. This painting was made especially for the cover of Vanity Fair and features Hollywood and Broadway stars of the 1920s such as Fred and Adele Aster, husband-and-wife Broadway royalty Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, actor John Barrymore in his Hamlet stage costume and dancer Ruth St. Denis.

This work by Boris Anisfeld is both monumental in size and skill, as it measures almost three metres large. The Golden Tribute portrays the personification of the epoch of Symbolism. Dancer Ida Rubenstein modelled for the painting. She posed as the naked tsarina surrounded by a crowd of monks holding gifts. As she reclines on her bed, she is the complete embodiment of decadence and freedom. As the subject of the painting she is the ultimate goddess and femme fatale.
