Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts, July 8th Sotheby's London

This extraordinary 65 lot sale features mostly biblical manuscripts and fragments but also a variation of different manuals and song scripts.

One of the two estimated top lots ($96,462 — $128,616) is a rare magnificently illustrated 133-leaf unrecorded volume of a manual of warfare with quire signatures on each page commissioned by Albrecht of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1490-1568). A flamboyant and learned ruler who transformed Königsberg into a hotbed of renaissance learning and culture through his position as 1st Duke of Prussia, Elector and Margrave of Brandenburg and last Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights. He founded the University of Königsberg and had a vast collection of German books in his Kammerbibliothek.

The volume has been in private hands for half-a-century, making this an anticipated sale.
