While the majority of the catwalk collections are a little out of reach for most of us, the handbag can be a more accessible step into that exclusive world.
Far from humble, these handbags are fashion statements in their own right. Buyers are put on waiting lists which can last months, even longer. The waiting time for the most famous handbag of all – The Hermes Birkin - is currently two and a half years.
In this month at Fellows Auction House in UK, a red Porosus Crocodile Birkin 35 handbag was included in their Designer Collection Auction. It went on to sell for over £$22,000 – a record for a handbag at the auction house.
Christian Dior handbags are similarly sought after which is why seeing them on the appraisal service is particularly exciting. This was sent in this week:
The model is called 'The Lady Dior'. It was created in 1994 and was an instant classic combining elegance and simplicity for unmistakable style. The details have been updated to move with the times but the overall shape and design have been consistent throughout the years.
The original was regularly photographed on the arm of Diana, Princess of Wales, whose timeless chic perfectly matched the sensibilities of the handbag.
Since then, The Lady been a firm favourite for the recent celebrity fashion pack with fans including Sarah Jessica Parker, Miranda Kerr and Marion Cotillard, who currently stars in Dior's latest advertisement campaigns.
With regards to auction prices, Christies sold a black quilted leather number for over $19,500 in 2015 and, in 2016 at Austin Auction Gallery, a canvas version was sold for $325. Based on the photographs sent in, we would expect this handbag to achieve around $1,000-$1,500 at a relevant auction.
