For artist Ed Ruscha, the whole affair has provided him with much inspiration, so much so that in April 2017 he will launch Desert X, Coachella's arty sister.

Ruscha's work has been about decoding the American landscape, once stating in an interview with Details: ''I had to go see Europe. I had notions about it, mostly through American movies.''

''Then I got there and it was all really new and unique to me, but I still craved American things. I wasn't captivated by the romance of Paris or London. I love visiting, but I'd rather be in L.A.''

Ruscha is on the board of the nonprofit group, who are launching the biennial, which includes Coachella art director Paul Clemente, Steve Nash formerly of Palm Springs Art Museum and art collector Beth Rudin DeWoody. Funding for Desert X will come from members of the board as well as from the event itself.

Come April 2017, time to dust off your festival head ware for a host of Desert X selfies.
