Frederic Remington’s famous bronze sculpture titled Bronco Buster sold for $510,000 at an auction held Sept. 15-16 by Brunk Auctions in Asheville, N.C. Also, a 3-D study by Henry Moore titled Maquette for Spindle Piece (1968) hit $312,000; a painting by Eugene Boudin titled Fecamp, Le Bassin (1892) climbed to $288,000; a still life of hollyhocks by Russian-American artist Nicolai Fechin earned $264,000; and Jane Peterson’s Fishing Boats, Gloucester, Mass., went for $120,000. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

A Tiffany & Company coffee and tea service in the Beekman pattern sold for $5,900 at an auction held September 10th by William J. Jenack Auctioneers in Chester, N.Y. Also, an oil on canvas painting by Mary Elizabeth Price (Am., 1877-1965), depicting houses along a stream, went for $4,248; an oil on canvas by Russian artist Martiros Seregeevich Sarian (Russian, 1880-1972), of a Yerevan street, hit $3,304; and an Art Deco-style display cabinet changed hands for $2,006. Prices are inclusive of the buyer’s premium.

Kingfisher feather headdress

A Kingfisher feather headdress and four hairpins, made in China in the 19th century, sold for $110,700 at an Asian Works of Art Auction held September 15th by Skinner, Inc. in Boston, Mass. The headdress included numerous phoenixes, a reference to the Chinese empress. Also, a Chinese three-drawer hardwood altar coffer changed hands for $52,275; and a hanging scroll depicting a boat ferrying a crane, done in the manner of Shen Yun from the Ming dynasty, went for $49,200. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

A small, circular domed Chinese green jade seal paste box and cover with an incised gilt Qianlong  mark sold for $37,900 in an online auction held Sept. 15-Oct. 3 by Lark Mason, based in New Braunfels, Tex. Also, a Chinese celadon jade mythical dragon plaque from the Yuan-Ming dynasty went for $8,800; a collection of 135 Chinese snuff bottles fetched a combined $61,956; and a pair of Yuan and early Ming dynasty carved jade hat finials brought a combined $32,125. Prices are inclusive of the buyer’s premium.

An acrylic on Masonite painting by Bob Kuhn (1920-2007), titled Closing the Distance, sold for $409,500 at the 11th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction, held Sept. 15-16 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, hosted by Trailside Galleries and Gerald Peters Gallery. Also, Bob Kuhn’s Onward and Upward hit $152,100; Navajo Scouting Party by Edgar Alwin Payne (1883-1947) realized $304,200; and New Horizons and Sheriff and Citizens of the Law, both by W.H.D. Koerner, each rose to $175,500. Prices include the buyer’s premium.
