A 1939 World War II poster by an unknown designer, with the iconic British directive Keep Calm and Carry On, sold for $15,000 at a Vintage Posters Auction held August 2nd by Swann Auction Galleries in New York City. Also, James Montgomery Flagg’s famous 1917 poster, I Want You for U.S. Army, found a new owner for $14,300; Rick Griffith’s Jimi Hendrix Experience / John Mayall (1968) brought $11,875; and Zodiac (1900) by Alphonse Mucha went for $11,250. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

 

Norman Rockwell painting, $1.68 million, Heritage

A baseball-themed painting by artist Norman Rockwell that appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1949, originally thought to be a signed copy but in fact was an original, sold for $1.68 million at a Platinum Night Sports Auction held Aug. 19-20 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Tex. Also, Lou Gehrig’s 1937 New York Yankees home pinstriped jersey hit $870,000; Mickey Mantle’s 1954 jersey made $432,000; and a bat used by Babe Ruth finished at $408,000. Prices are inclusive of the buyer’s premium.

A Chinese Yongzheng Period underglaze blue porcelain ‘dragon’ stem bowl sold for $51,000 at an estate auction held August 12th by Michaan’s Auctions in Alameda, Calif. Also, an 1852 US $20 gold coin, graded ANACS AU-50, earned $2,160; a group of five Yixing stoneware objects realized $10,800; a pair of glazed Fahua-style baluster vases knocked down for $8,400; a jade 14kt yellow gold pendant topped out at $900; and a suite of Steubenware, pattern 6401, rose to $2,700. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

 

First Peter Parley book, $6,000, PBA Galleries

A rare, first edition copy of the first book by Peter Parley, rebound in modern morocco and cloth, sold for $6,000 at an Americana, Travel & Exploration, World History & Cartography Auction held August 10th by PBA Galleries in San Francisco. Also, an album with 46 gelatin silver photos of early 20th century Habgzhou, China brought $2,400; a Limited Edition de Luxe of Capt. F. Brinkley’s 10 volumes on Japan fetched $3,300; and a WWII French map of Germany made $1,560. Prices include a 20 percent buyer’s premium.

An oil on canvas painting of the sun breaking through clouds over a Maine harbor by Maine artist Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) sold for $169,650 at a Summer Sale held Aug. 25-27 by Thomaston Place Auction Galleries in Thomaston, Maine. Also, an untitled gouache painting by Alexander Calder (N.Y./Fr., 1898-1976) fetched $64,350; a large 1925 oil on canvas by Waldo Peirce (Am., 1884-1970) brought $33,000; and a 1930s Paris painting by James Taylor Hartwood made $28,080. Prices include a 17 percent buyer’s premium.
