An oil on canvas sunset landscape painting by Birger Sandzen (Am., 1871-1954) sold for $97,200 at an auction held August 5th by Case Antiques Auctions & Appraisals in Knoxville, Tenn. Also, an oil painting by John Frederick Kensett, titled Contentment Island, hammered for $94,800; a painting by Memphis artist Carroll Cloar (1913-1993), titled The Waiting, climbed to $47,360; and an Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec lithograph of the Moulin Rouge dancer Jane Avril reached $60,000. A Louis XVI-style painted mirror and marble-top neoclassical console sold for $4,200 at a Summer Fine Art & Antiques Auction held July 22nd by Capo Auction in Long Island City, N.Y. Also, a black leather Mies van der Rohe Barcelona daybed changed hands for $3,300; a metal bench in the form of a butterfly fetched $2,640; a watercolor by William Matthews (Am., b. 1949) titled Tusca Rora made $2,520; and a Janus et Cie Amalfi Collection garden settee rose to $1,440. A green-cut-to-clear Dorflinger Montrose punch bowl set made in Pennsylvania sold for $114,000 at a Fine & Decorative Arts Auction held July 21-22 by Brunk Auctions in Asheville, N.C. Also, a painting of beagles by John Emms titled After the Chase made $45,600; a Southern federal inlaid cherry bottle case attributed to Mason County, Kentucky fetched $48,000; a New England Amberina cut glass cologne rose to $38,400; and a Kentucky federal cherry sugar desk hit $38,400. Prices include a 20 percent buyer’s premium.

A pair of low Oeuf chairs from the 1950s by Jean Royere sold for $231,250 at a Design Auction held June 6th by Phillips in New York City. Also, Ron Arad’s 2009 bookcase titled Oh, the Farmer and the Cowman Should be Friends, that unites books in a sculptured representation of the continental U.S., realized $298,000; a Jean Proove cabinet, model no. 152, circa 1952, hit $190,000; and Gio Ponti and Piero Fornasetti’s Madrepore dining table and armchairs set, circa 1950, made $125,000. Also, a painting by Eugene Boudin, titled Rivage Aux Environs de Trouville, realized $75,000; a Patek Philippe Gondolo Calendario watch (circa 2007) fetched $21,600; and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso moon phase power reserve watch made $18,000.
