An oil painting by Charles Ephraim Burchfield (Am., 1893-1967), titled March Pools at Twilight, sold for $131,250 at an auction held April 6 by Freeman’s Auctioneers in Philadelphia, Pa. Also, a Chinese Han dynasty style inlaid and patinated archaistic bronze vessel, Hu, realized $33,750; a Chinese lacquered bronze figure of a seated warrior went for $28,750; Joseph Stella’s Pittsburgh Steel Mill breezed to $20,000; and a 1994 floor lamp by Albert Paley (b. 1944), titled Sphere, hit $16,250. An elephant folio print by John J. Audubon, titled Carolina Parrot, engraved and printed and colored by Robert Havell, with the Whatman watermark, sold for $78,000 at an auction held April 6-8 by Eldred’s in East Dennis, Mass. Also, an early 19th century scrimshaw whale’s tooth depicting the battle between the Shannon and the Chesapeake during the War of 1812, attributed to the Lady Wellington engraver, made $72,000; and a Grueby vase in a matte green glaze went for $21,600. A poster for the 1933 Universal movie The Invisible Man sold for $274,850 at a Vintage Movie Posters Auction held March 25-26 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Tex. Also, a poster for Casablanca (Warner Bros., 1953, 4-Fogli) realized $107,550; a poster for Bordertown (Warner Bros., 1935, 4-Fogli) fetched $33,460; a poster for It’s a Wonderful Life (RKO, 1948, 4-Fogli) finished at $28,680; and a one-sheet poster for the 1946 Columbia movie Gilda changed hands for $22,705. Prices include the buyer’s premium.

An elongated slate long neck birdstone from the collection of Jan W. Sorgenfrei (Ohio, 1942-2012) sold for $43,200 at an auction held April 8th by Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati, Oh. Also, a Huron-Wyandot Native American beaded Wampum belt climbed to $25,200; a Tufa cast silver and turquoise cuff fetched $11,100; an Arapaho Tomahawk Society staff from the second half of the 19th century gaveled for $27,600; and a Dakota bear claw necklace changed hands for $16,800. Also, a WWII soldier-identified A-2 flight jacket and bomber shearling cap made $2,300; a Winchester M-1 carbine military firearm hit the mark for $1,100; a Colt Python revolver rang out at $1,800; a Winchester model 70 rifle went for $1,600; and a Romanian PSL Marksman military long arm rifle hit $1,100.
