Sher-Gil is one of India's leading 20th century artists and is recognised widely as the mother of modern Indian art. This piece was held in the collection of Sher-Gil's class mate at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts Boris Taslitzky. The Franco-Russian artist Taslitzky was also Sher-Gil's muse, lover, and artistic partner until they parted in 1934, just one year after this work was painted.
