The cards, written in Kruger's signature red and white typeface, are emblazoned with: ''Who is healed? Who is housed? Who is silent? Who speaks?''

They will be distributed at random vending machines at Queensboro Plaza, Broadway-Lafayette Street, East Broadway and the B/C station at 116th Street. Kruger explained ''I tried to have a range of stations to have the most varied mix of riders.''

The artist explained why she chose the subway for her project: ''I take the subway six times a day when I’m in the city,” she said. “The level of dispersal and distribution of meaning is huge.''

Kruger's artwork can also be seen at the LES Skatepark under the Manhattan Bridge, and on a billboard at 17th Street and 10th Avenue.

The card's are being released as part of Performa's seventh biennial which features installations, such as Kruger's, around the city. See here for more information.
