Poul Gernes was born in 1925 in Copenhagen, where he also died in 1996. He worked with painting and sculpture, and designed furniture and lamps. In 1961, Gernes and art historian Troels Andresen opened an art school for experimental art, which is best known as the Eks School. Gernes strived to imbue his artwork with decorative significance for society, something that can be seen in his many colorful pieces. For a period in the 1960s, Gernes lived in Skåne, Sweden.
