Alton Tobey (1914-2005) USA

Alton Tobey, born in Middletown, Connecticut, was an american artist widely known for his murals, illustrations and portraits. He is famous as the illustrator of the twelve volumes of “The Golden Book. History of the United States” (1963) as well as for his mural paintings that can be found in public places in America.

Tobey also created less known works, made in an abstract and experimental style. He created abstract idioms with “curvilinears”, his self-invented alphabet inspired by Albert Einstein’s claim about there being no straight lines in reality. His series “fragments” is another example of his modern art where he made portraits using close ups of famous people.
