Irving Penn (1917-2009) USA

Irving Penn was an American portrait and fashion photographer. Penn photographed several famous artists including Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali and Marcel Duchamp, and is considered to be one of the most influential and productive photographers of the twentieth century. Penn had a sense of classic elegance and modern minimalism, which many appreciated.

In 1943 he engaged in a collaborative project with Vogue magazine, which subsequently opened new doors for exhibitions in galleries and museums. Penn was trained in design and painting, but always referred to himself as a photographer.

Penn donated numerous works to Moderna Museet in Stockholm in memory of his Swedish wife and he won the 1985 Hasselblad Award.
