Candida Höfer (1944-) Germany

Candida Höfer is a German contemporary photographer born in Eberswalde, who now works and lives in Cologne. Höfer was educated at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she studied film with Ole John and photography with Bernd and Hilla Becher. Höfer represented Germany, along with Martin Kippenberger, at the Venice Biennale in 2003. Since then her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at art galleries and museums throughout Germany. Höfer began her photography career as a portrait and interior photographer, but many of her interior photos focus on the “empty interior.” Characteristically, her interior photos are often taken in public places. Höfer’s works are represented in spaces such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
