Edvard Munch (1863-1944) Norway

Edvard Munch is one of Norway’s greatest artists of all time. Munch decided to devote himself to art while still a teenager and debuted at the age of 20 with works that included a self-portrait. During his initial education in what was then known as Kristiania (now Oslo), he experimented with different styles, ranging from Naturalism to Impressionism.

His painting “The Scream” (1893) is one of the world 's most famous works of art. Its style, like so many of Edvard Munch's other paintings, is an expression of neurotic Impressionism. “The Scream” was also an important source of inspiration for German Expressionism. Munch was also a prominent portrait painter and graphic artist.

Edvard Munch’s work is represented at the Munch Museum and National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, as well as the Thielska galleriet in Stockholm.
