Dick Bengtsson (1936-1989) Sweden

Painter and sculptor Dick Bengtsson had his artistic breakthrough in the 1960s. Bengtsson did not believe in originality, like many other new realists, but instead used cliché-ridden motifs and symbols – often from mass-produced models. In 1984, Bengtsson had an acclaimed retrospective exhibition at Moderna Museet that was well received by both fellow artists and critics.

Bengtsson applies a final treatment of oil or varnish to his paintings, which often gives the impression that they are damaged. He also often irons the surface to make it smooth and shiny. Bengtsson's works also comprise film, installation and collage, where designs of buildings and landscapes play a key role.
