Sam Francis (1923-1994) USA

Sam Francis was born in 1923 and is an American graphic artist and painter. He studied botany, medicine and psychology at the University of California. While hospitalized for an injury sustained in World War II, he met artist David Park and then began to paint. He was influenced by Impressionism and settled in Paris, where he worked in monochrome, which he subsequently abandoned to work with large paintings in bright contrasting colors, known as Color Field Painting.
