1860-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC.
1860-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC.This is a lustrous Choice AU with a suitably bold strike and richly original pinkish-honey patina. Federal records indicate that 544,950 double eagles were coined in the San Francisco Mint during 1860, these having a face value of $10,899,000. In 1982, David W. Akers found a scant five offerings of examples listed as Mint State in a survey of more than 400 major auction sales. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933 (2008) accounted for only about two dozen coins in Mint State. Such rarity in Mint State places market pressure on Choice AU examples, and when they are as handsome and fresh as the present piece, prices can be equivalent to MS-60 or MS-61. Clearly this impressive coin will see spirited bidding among astute double eagle enthusiasts.Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection.PCGS Population: 55; 39 finer (MS-64 finest).PCGS# 8931. Smith & Wesson Model No.1 Third Issue Revolver
Very high condition Smith & Wesson Model No.1, Third Issue revolver, 7 shot, caliber .22 short rim fire. This was the final incarnation of the first metallic cartridge S&W revolvers that launched the company into being one of the most famous and successful firearms manufacturers of all time. This superior quality revolver was made from 1868-1881 and was a particular favorite of women or anyone needing a small, multi shot self defense weapon. This model is known as a “tip-up” revolver as the barrel tips up for loading and is secured by a hinge at the top of the barrel and frame juncture. For unloading fired cases, the barrel was tipped upward, the cylinder slid forward and free and then the stationary rod mounted under the barrel was utilized to push the empty cartridge cases free from the cylinder chambers. Loading was simple. The cylinder was easily loaded with seven cartridges, the cylinder was replaced in the frame and the barrel swung down and spring-locked in place. At this point the gun was ready to be fired. Since these were small arms and easily concealed in pockets or purses, most saw considerable carry use and surviving specimens today are usually found with much of the original finish worn off. This is a superb example in the middle serial number range for this model of 94389. It retains nearly all of the bright factory nickel finish and has beautiful factory rosewood grips that are in excellent condition showing no chips or cracks. The mechanics are also fine and even the bore is bright with sharp rifling. It retains perfect, sharp and correct barrel markings consisting of the Smith and Wesson address and patent dates ending in 1860. Overall, this early S&W is in a state of preservation seldom seen for a small pocket revolver made in the mid-1870s. The firearm qualifies as an Antique FIX, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 94389Read more

Allen & Thurber .34 Cal Six-Shot Pepperbox Pistol
Factory Engraved Allen & Thurber six shot percussion “Pepperbox” revolving pistol, c.1840s, .34 caliber with 3 7/8” gracefully fluted barrels. This is the medium size Allen Pepperbox that found favor as both a large pocket pistol as well as a holstered belt weapon. These early competitors to the Colt revolver found favor with the “49ers” of California Gold Rush fame as well as with urban dwellers in need of a repeating firearm for self defense. Many were carried as private weapons by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. Examples in fine condition are rare as these handguns were often used for “daily carry” by their owners. This is a very fine example as it displays a lovely, even uncleaned patina and still retains traces of original blue on the barrels! The usual condition for one of these is heavily worn gray metal at best and more often than not badly rusted, pitted and showing abuse. The frame is factory hand engraved as is the nipple shield and back strap. This is a double action pistol in which a single pull of the trigger revolves the barrel cluster, raises the bar-style hammer and fires the gun. The bar hammer is smooth sided and correctly unmarked because two flutes between the barrels are marked “ALLEN THURBER & CO” and WORCESTER” as well as “Patented” and the date “1845” (later examples have this marking on the side of the bar hammer). Walnut grips are excellent and exhibit much of the original finish. Excellent mechanical condition and a truly fine example of a uniquely American firearm of the pre-Civil War period that has not been re-finished, over-cleaned or altered. Serial Number: 39. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.Read more

This is an original authentic George Washington Indian Peace Medal dated 1789 and struck in circa 1904 to 1910. The piece was struck in bronze at the U.S. Mint in a size of 76mm. The lot shows an original turn of the Century medal presentation collar with red center, embroidered metal thread stars and braided metal long fringed tassels. The presentation collar is accented by carved horn concho beads having trade bead and horse hair drops, these drops are thought to be a much more contemporary addition. These were made by the Mint when it became embarrassingly clear that there were no round Washington Indian Peace medals available to complete the entire set. The dies were cut early in the past century and the first striking was in silver and a bronze with the later striking being again in a bronze finish with lathe finishing lines on their edge. Provenance: From a large Native American artifacts and weapons collection in Paola, Kansas. Literature: The exact same strike Washington Peace Medal dated 1789 is shown on page 69; Plate 19; Figure 64 in the book, “Indian Peace Medals / Issued in the United States” by Bauman L. Belden and published by N. Flayderman & Co. Also mentioned along with an illustration in the book, “Indian Peace Medals in American History” by Francis Paul Prucha from the Oklahoma Press on page 138; figure 60. The medal used the bust of Washington from the Evacuation of Boston Medal designed by Jean-Simon Duvivier in 1786, with the standard inscription of the presidential medals, “GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1789”, and the early peace medals reverse with the clasped hands and the words, “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP” along with a cross pipe tomahawk and peace pipe. The piece measures 76mm or approximately 3 inches. An example stuck in Bronze sold at the Early American History Auctions 8/29/2004 sale for $2,000. The medal shows a dark patina, but has a fine strike area with smooth background and crisp details, as should be seen on an early example. The outside edge is void of any visible lathe marks, making this an original circa 1904-1910 striking. The entire ensemble measures 21”L x 12”W.Read more

1909-S Indian Eagle. MS-63 (PCGS).
1909-S Indian Eagle. MS-63 (PCGS).A particularly impressive 1909-S eagle, both sides retain full mint luster to uncommonly smooth, fully Choice quality surfaces. Boldly to sharply struck with original pinkish-honey patina. Most Uncirculated 1909-S tens extant entered the numismatic market beginning in the 1970s, although the number of examples in any given find has never been substantial. Also a conditionally challenging issue, the 1909-S is seldom offered any finer than MS-62. Clearly this MS-63 represents a significant find for the advanced 20th century gold specialist.Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection.PCGS# 8864. Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy Revolver
Colt Pocket Model of Navy Caliber, also known as the Model 1862 Pocket Navy, .36 caliber, five shot revolver. This is one of the most rare and difficult of the Colt percussion revolvers to locate as less than 22,000 were made and most of these were shipped as factory conversions from percussion ignition to cartridge or made originally as cartridge models. This example has serial number 33431 which matches on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt and cylinder. Grips are correct one piece walnut and still retain some fine original varnish. Grip straps are a lovely uncleaned mellow brass. The remaining steel parts show a soft and extremely attractive aged patina with sharp markings and a good roll engraved cylinder scene. The 4 ½” octagon barrel is clearly stamped with the correct Colt name and New York address. The rear left side of the brass trigger guard retains the “.36 CAL” stamping. Somewhat larger than the more common Model 1849 pocket revolver of .31 caliber, the larger .36 caliber Pocket Navy packed a considerably more powerful punch and doubled as an easily concealed pocket pistol as well as a compact belt or holster revolver. Further, this all matching example is mechanically tight, is fully functional, and as an historic pre-cartridge era Colt revolver is a rare prize for the Colt, antique firearm, Civil War or Old West collector. The percussion Pocket Navy Model of 1862 is seldom seen on the collector market today, and specimens in any condition are extremely hard to locate. Note: the final 9th edition of Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms and their Values, published twelve years ago in 2007 shows the Percussion Model 1862 Pocket Navy revolver in antique fine condition at $2250.Read more
