Russian, Handwoven Bessarabian Rug 13'10" x 15'1"

About the item

One of only three known tapestry-woven examples produced by the Imperial Tapestry Factory during this period, this Bessarabian carpet features harmonious colors and an Adamesque central medallion with swan medallions and floral bouquets.Russia’s Imperial Tapestry Factory, established in 1716 near St. Petersburg by Peter the Great, began production of floor carpets in both tapestry weave and knotted-pile by the early 19th century. Russian workers were skillfully trained by master weavers in Paris, with the resulting French-inspired styles favored by Russian royalty. The always-stylish neoclassical elements of this rare carpet illustrate the exceptional quality achieved by the Imperial Tapestry Factory at the height of its production. Today’s interior decorating trends embrace the delicate, neutral colors of this classic design.
