Curated by Robert Storr and Francesca Pietropaolo."North by New York: New Nordic Art" Works by fifteen artists prove that there’s more to Nordic culture than the angst of Ingmar Bergman and black-metal music—although the stereotype is winningly lampooned in a bright-pink neon sign that reads "Scandinavian Pain," seen in photographs of an installation by Iceland’s Ragnar Kjartansson. The shows’ co-curators, Robert Storr and Francesca Pietropaolo, present an eclectic view of their subject that ranges from abstract paintings by the Danish master Per Kirkeby to the Finnish photographer Saana Wang’s riveting pictures of women and children in Beijing, wearing everyday clothes and elaborate stage makeup. An even more striking transnational effort is the all-male Screaming Men’s Choir, conducted by Petri Sirviö, reciting the former Australian Prime Minister’s apology for his country’s mistreatment of indigenous tribes. Through Aug. 19.
