A lovely set of both volumes of this first edition of the Bible (in French) illustrated by Gustave Dore, in very good condition for its age (150 years plus). No Dust Jackets (as issued?). Covers: full red leather with 5 raised bands to spines and gilt designs to all faces and gilt lettering to spines. Designs to fronts and rears include embossed and gilded letters IHS within an embossed, gilded and decorated frame; in very good condition for their age, there is nevertheless some darkening to the leather and rubbing to all edges; spines are intact but small tears (1 cm approx.) to top front and rear of spine of volume 2. Internally: very bright, clean and tightly bound; no bookplates or inscriptions; all edges gilt (very bright); paste downs and first free end papers hand? marbled, very bright and sharp with bright gilt borders to paste downs; occasional very slight foxing and small mark to title page carrying through to page 3 of volume 2; text (in French) in 2 columns with central classical decorative pillars, most signed Giacomelli but other names also appear. Lavishly illustrated throughout with black and white engravings by Gustave Dore. Volume 1: 118 plates, 912 pp. Volume 2: 110 plates, 949 pp. A very large and heavy set which will incur increased postal charges outside the UK.
