Lt.-General John Schofield (1831 - 1906) was a life-long military man. He attended West Point, was in the thick of Civil War action, served as Sec of War to Presidents Johnson and Grant was in the Battle of Wilson's Creek (and won the Medal of Honor), Missouri, Atlanta, etc. Frontis portrait, maps, index. Original publisher's brown cloth covers with gilt spine lettering; top edge gilt. This copy has general cover wear, and very light dampstaining to edges of pages causing the contents to become rippled; new end papers, but contents are still a bit loose in the binding. This is a good reading copy of the first edition of an important military figure in U. S. History. Ref: Nevins I-156, Broadfoot, p. 513 ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 577 pages
