About the item

Purchased for $5,000 at the 1918 Saratoga yearling sale, thoroughbred race horse Man O' War would prove to be a sound investment for Samuel D. Riddle, who would earn a quarter million dollars for the animal rated number one by Blood-Horse Magazine in their list of the top 100 U.S. racehorses of the twentieth century. He won virtually ever race he entered in 1919 and 1920, including the Preakness and the Belmont in the second half of that span. The offered relic derives from the elite equine's retirement when his primary function was passing his elite genetics on to new generations. An included 2009 letter of provenance which accompanied the shoe when it was donated to an auction benefiting "Old Friends' Equine Retirement"states that the letter's great-uncle had been a bookie in the 1920's and 1930's and a good friend of the Riddles, who sent this shoe as a token of friendship. The shoe is consistent with others we've encountered from this period, and exhibits oxidation but no other condition issues. It is showcased in a frame with an old picture postcard and handwritten text announcing the provenance. Frame measures 23x12". HID07601242017
