About the item

(ca 1908) The 6.5 Mannlicher cartridge was very popular in Africa for its medium to small game because its long slim bullet had great penetration . Many of these Mannlicher rifles were retailed by various British houses. This particular rifle was retailed by the esteemed firm of James Woodward & Sons, with their name and address engraved through the original finish on the top of the barrel. The rifle is in takedown configuration with many factory options including pop-up tang sight, and removable grip cap with trap. 22 - 1/2" Tapered round barrel with express rear sight has front ramp and silver bead set 1" back from muzzle. London nitro proofs are at breech end of barrel. Typical Mannlicher action with rotary Schoenauer magazine has all correct factory markings and British proofs. Rifle takes down by removing magazine, toggling a latch at front of trigger guard, removing a pin at the front of stock and lifting barrel and action out of stock. Half stock of nicely marbled European walnut measures 14 - 1/2" over ribbed steel buttlplate with trap. Grip checkering is of English point pattern. Checkering on forend is of standard Mannlicher type,. An unusual but undoubtedly original feature is relief carved scroll on forend tip. Horn grip cap is removed by pressing a detent at rear and turning to reveal a trap containing spare front sight. Stock also features small right hand cheekpiece sling loops, and Woodward serial number 6226 (ca 1913) engraved on trigger guard bow. Rifle is housed in canvas and leather case embossed "G. W. C." on top which is lined in green cloth., A paper Woodward label is in lid with this rifle's Steyr serial number penciled in. CONDITION: Excellent, very close to new, possibly unfired since proof with only a few minor marks in original blue on barrel, with a small rust fleck on floorplate. Temper blue on bolt stop button silvered from contact with case. There are some minor marks and scratches in original finish on stock. Original blue on buttplate silvered on sharp edges and around screw on heel. Bore is excellent. Mechanically excellent. Case is fair, canvas discolored, leather trim rubbed and frayed, lid partially detached. Interior cloth is good. Label considerably foxed. A truly fine pre WWI Mannlicher. MGM12.
