Ball 151 Cr. 114 Cotton Certificate $1,000 1862 PMG Choice Extremely

About the item

One thousand of these cotton certificates were prepared, but none were issued. The example in this lot is one that was prepared, as it is signed by the Confederate Registry of the Treasury Robert Tyler, signed on the back by J(ames) M(urray) Mason as Commissioner, and serial numbered, which in this case is 711. As a sidebar, in 1861, Confederate diplomats Mason and John Slidell were caught up in what became the Trent Affair when they were removed from the a British mail steamer packet, by the US Navy ship, the The Ball-Simmons reference discusses the particulars for this cotton certificate on page 163. It has earned a rarity rating of R7, 11 to 20 known. We have offered a remainder before, but never a prepared example of Ball 151. The remainder graded PMG VF 35 Net and realized $1,410 in January, 2017. Our current offering is a premium example for the grade in a comment free holder and should do considerably better.HID07601242017
