An East Coast Man Sarcastically Writes About The Mormon...

About the item

(MORMON WAR). The Mormon War was a small scale, armed conflict between Mormon settlers and the United States government; it lasted from May 1857 to July 1858. ALS. 3pg. 8" x 10". Wilmington [Delaware]. October 13, 1858. An autograph letter signed "Major": "There is but one person whose letters I delight to reply to in preference to yours and this person is a nice little woman on the other side of the Delaware, you must not feel offended because you do not stand first, you know the ladies claim precedence, and I therefore only obey custom?I invariably wish your letters were twice as long as you write them. Often when musing over my cigar, my thoughts take passage by air line to San Francisco via I don't know where, for they never stop at any place to vest on the route, I then see the great city, the Bay the Golden Gateway, the rock y island with its unfinished defenses and its Lieut of US Engineers? Our part of this great country is getting along tolerably well, the only changed being made at political ones, as you will see by the papers, Pennsylvania the important state has turned one of those peculiar and complete somersaults, sending but three or four Buchanan Democrats to the next Congress. Our election comes on next month. At present we are amused and entertained by stump speakers almost nightly?the President's Mormon campaign a brilliant undertaking & the government has covered itself with the greatest kind of glory, and following the great rule of 'to the victors go the spoils' the soldiers must have a good time with their female captives?". The letter is on blue paper and is in fine condition.
